We're over half way through #VolunteersWeek, but the chats with our fantastic volunteers continue!
Today we're talking to Jaz to see how she got involved with Scouting, and why she volunteers with 1st Farnsfield!
Why did you start volunteering with The Scouts?
It's something I've always been interested in doing, and I didn't have the opportunity until I got asked if I wanted to help at 1st Farnsfield, I leapt at the opportunity and I've loved every minute.
What is the best thing you’ve done as a leader?
Helping young people over come their fears and build resilience. A particular highlight was on the summer camp to Switzerland in 2023, where we went rafting down the Aare River and a few young people where afraid to jump in the river, eventually they overcame their fears and they had such a great time swimming along on the current. It was a proud moment seeing them overcome this challenge.
Have you learned anything new, as a volunteer?
It has given me an understanding of how an affective volunteer youth organisation works, working with scouts and planning camps has also aided me in planning my work trips and ensuring that I'm doing everything correctly to maximise opportunities for young people.
How do you think volunteering now will help at work/in your future career?
I'm a secondary school teacher so working with other young people outside of the school environment always has benefits and allows me to see a different side to the young people than you'd see in school and shows what they're really capable of. It has also helped me to be a better teacher in working with a wide range of people from all sorts of backgrounds improving my interpersonal skills.
All in all volunteering for scouts has been one of the best opportunities I've taken on, and I'd recommend that anyone can do it and should come and give it ago!
