Volunteers Week - In Conversation with Laura

To mark #VolunteersWeek2024 we've teamed up with some of our fantastic volunteers in Central Notts!

Volunteers are the lifeblood of Scouting and over the next few days, we’ll be talking to different volunteers and bringing you their story and what keeps them volunteering. Today we’re talking to Laura who started her Scouting journey as a Squirrels Cohort Coach, and has recently become a Group Lead Volunteer at her local group!

Why did you start volunteering with The Scouts? - I wanted to volunteer to give something back, as well as seeing the fulfilment friends and family get from volunteering with The Scouts. I started as a Cohort Coach with the Country Active Support Unit, helping out with the roll out of Squirrels. When that came to an end, Instead of sitting at home on a Friday night watching rubbish on TV while my Partner was at Explorers, I figured I’d get stuck in and joined 5th Carlton as an Assistant Scout Section Leader and I’ve never looked back! I’ve just become Group Scout Leader at 5th Carlton and I’m loving it.

What is the best thing you’ve done as a leader?

I lived in Japan as a teenager and have a passion for Japanese culture, so when the opportunity came up to use that knowledge to help my scouts with their International badge I was really excited. We had an evening of Japanese activities and I loved teaching the scouts how to write their names and introduce themselves in Japanese, as well as seeing them enjoy making sushi and trying their hand at origami. Being able to share something I’m passionate about and seeing the scouts really enjoy it was amazing.

Have you learned anything new, as a volunteer?

I’ve learned patience, as well as improving my teamwork skills. The team at 5th Carlton are so supportive of each other!

How do you think volunteering now will help at work/in your future career? - I’m learning lots of new skills, it shows employers that not only am I someone who can learn new things, but also that I’m someone who is committed.
